Salahuddin Bakery

Written by: Nurul Syazwaniey Fatin binti Ramlee

The Salahuddin Bakery first opened its doors in 1937 and has been in operation ever since. The bakery has not changed much since the days of old and the inside still looks like it would have done in the 1930s.

Here you will find a delicious selection of baked treats, but one of the main reasons that people have been flocking here for years is for the curry puffs which are a traditional Malay snack of curried meat or vegetables stuffed inside flaky pastry. Salahuddin Bakery’s Indian curry puffs come in fillings of curried cut potatoes and onions with minced chicken or lamb. The shells of Salahuddin’s curry puffs are crispy and flaky. Bits of the layered flaky crusts fall off as you bite into the curry puff.

They still use that old room-sized wood fired oven that they had been using since 1937.  Salahuddin makes a wide range of old styled cakes, breads, pastries, muffins and Indian puffs – all with that old wood fired oven.

Not only are the confectioneries made in the old way. The manner the goods are displayed for sale is just like old times. Based on the customers feedback, even the warm and gentle way Encik Salahuddin interacts with his customers is reminiscent of a time when people are less harried and makes time to chat and catch up with each other.
