Haunted Places in Johor

Written by Nurul Syazwaniey Fatin binti Ramlee

Bismillahirahmanirrahim (بِسْـــــــــمِ اَللّهِ الرّحْمن الرّحيم). Okay, so this time, my post will be a quite different from my previous one because this post will not be about attractions in Johor. Today, I will bring you guys to explore some haunted and spooky places in Johor. Without wasting any time, let's get started!

1) THE VILLA NABILLA BUNGALOW

Tales of the abandoned structure that is Villa Nabila have been trending on social media, with netizens giving their take on the spooky Johorian site. Rumours surfaced online that a group of 23 children went missing at Villa Nabila, an abandoned bungalow in Danga Bay here, reputed to be among the five most-haunted places in the country. The rumours were reportedly false, but police said that they had received one report of a 16-year-old boy who went missing on Saturday, purportedly after he was seen entering the villa.

According to Urban Legend, if anyone enters the bungalow in even numbers, they will leave the house in an odd number. A twitter user shared that Nabila was a little kid, she was killed by her stepmother (some said the maid) who was greedy to possess her former husband’s heirloom. Based on experience, many photographers don’t dare to visit Villa Nabila because the pictures they’ve snapped would include an uninvited guest.

There are several versions of how the 40-year-old building earned its reputation, including one about murder in a wealthy Caucasian family that once lived there. Another version tells of how the maid killed the family, including a girl named Nabila, and buried their bodies in the compound. Yet another tale is that the family was killed by two hit men, hired by a relative because of greed. Until now, the mystery remain unsolved.

2) Kemenyan City

If you travel across the Causeway often, you've probably heard of Paradigm Mall, the largest mall in Johor Bahru. But did you know the newly opened two million sq ft shopping centre was previously abandoned since 1997? There is one story that happened on a Singaporean Family and was quite famous back then.

So, it started when a Singaporean family was making their way back home when they drove past Kemayan City. They saw the mall bustling with customers and being kiasu Singaporeans, decided to join the buzz. After some time, they got out of the mall with their hands full of shopping bags. Feeling good about their haul at Kemayan City, they decided to show what they had bought to their relatives. To the Singaporeans' (and their wallets') horror, their shopping bags were filled with dried leaves and twigs, instead of things they thought they had bought.

3) NEW YORK HOTEL JOHOR BAHRU

The hotel has an alleged history where a girl killed herself in one of the rooms on the 13th floor. The structure of the hotel is weird as the lifts are separated from each other via the long corridor of hotel rooms.

It is said along the corridor of the 13th floor, you’ll see a room which is sealed with no door knobs to enter that particular room. Guests has complaint that the lift would suddenly stop at the exact floor where the girl committed suicide. However, this hotel is still operate until now.
